The History of the Villa Zorayda Museum
Villa Zorayda, also known as Zorayda Castle, was built in 1883 by Franklin W. Smith. Smith was an eccentric millionaire who wanted a summer home. The structure was modeled after Alhambra, a Moorish palace in Granada. Villa Zorayda was named for one of the princesses in “Tales from Alhambra,” a collection of short stories and essays from Washington Irving. In 1993, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. After going through renovations and being reopened to the public in 2008, the building now serves as a look into St. Augustine’s past as well as displaying the many antiques from the original owner.

The museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Villa Zorayda tickets are just $10 for adults.
