The first weekend of December everyone enjoys the Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday morning, the Annual
Garden Club’s Tour of Homes and the very same evening’s British Night watch and Parade Reenactment.

Also on its 8th year, one of the city’s most beautiful buildings – The Villa Zorayda hosts its Annual Holiday Tours.

The Villa Zorayda offers their 8th Annual Candlelight Tours of the Museum on select dates during the holidays. The museum is absolutely elegant this time of year!

As part of St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights festivities, the Villa Zorayda’s popular Candlelight Tours take visitors on guided adventures through this exotic museum. Over one hundred candles illuminate the tours throughout this unusual former home. Lavish Christmas decorations in Zorayda colors of red and gold are everywhere, with a spectacular Christmas tree taking center stage in the interior Court of Lions.

Candlelight Tours are led by docents. The 90-minute tour begins at 5:30, 6:00 or 6:30 p.m., depending on whether or not it is a tour that includes refreshments. The tour on Saturday, December 2, 2017, which does include refreshments, starts earlier than normal so guests can attend the Colonial Night Watch parade at 7:00 p.m. that evening.

Refreshments include homemade Christmas cookies and punch, and are offered at 6:00 p.m. See schedule below for dates and times of tours both with refreshments and without. Space is limited due to the popularity of the event. You must reserve your tickets at

Tour dates remaining are November 29th, December 2, 6, 10, 13, 16, 20, 22, 27, 28 and 30, 2017, and on January 1 and 6, 2018

The History of the Villa Zorayda

On the National Register of Historic Places, it was built in 1883 as the winter residence of Franklin W. Smith utilizing his method of construction of poured concrete and crushed coquina shell. It is built 1/10th the scale of a section of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. This building set a precedence for St. Augustine and began the Moorish Spanish Revival style of architecture that is seen throughout the city today. In 1904 it became the Zorayda Club. On display for the first time ever is the custom made bone china made exclusively for the Zorayda Club.

In 1913 it was purchased by Abraham S. Mussallem, an authority on Oriental rugs, fine arts and Egyptian artifacts. In 1922 it became one of the most fashionable places for casino gambling. Then, in the mid 1930s, it was opened as a museum featuring the priceless antique collections of both Franklin Smith and A.S. Mussallem which are still on display today.
