More of St Augustine attractions, reenactments and weapon demos
When Pedro Menedez de Aviles landed here in St. Augustine on September 8, 1565, he brought 20 artillery pieces with him to protect the fledgling settlement. The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park has a replica of one of those six-pounder guns, and give hourly demonstrations about the history of their use in the settlement of St. Augustine. Then they fire the big cannons!
Nothing can compare to the sound and feel of artillery – the roar and smell of the powder transports you back to a time when a small band of Spanish soldier-farmers faced an uncertain future in a new land that was naturally rich, but filled with hostile and potentially lethal threats.
Additional weapons demonstrations include arquebus gun lectures and firing and period crossbow demonstrations. Since these period weapons require dry powder charges, the demonstrations are weather-dependent. Regular admission to Fountain of Youth is 15.00 per adult and does include the weapon demos.
On the first Saturday of the month from 9:00am-11:30am, a Militia Muster & Training will be held at Fort Mose.
Come visit and be transported back to the 18th Century!
Watch as members of the Fort Mose Militia practice their firing drills using historic weapons and teach new members how to safely fire their weapons.
Demonstrations on historic weapons will be given including musket firing drills.
Children of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in the children’s militia training using wooden toy muskets and authentic uniform accessories.
