No visit to St. Augustine is complete without visiting the Plaza de la Constitución! This historic landmark is one of the cultural hubs for our beautiful city. It’s not only a historical icon in and of itself. It also hosts some of the city’s best events and free concerts throughout the year! Find out why this park is so special, and how you can book your next trip just a short walk away!
Visit the Plaza de la Constitución
The Plaza de la Constitución dates back to 1573. That makes it the oldest public park in the country! Despite its age, it only got its name in 1812 when a monument to the Spanish Constitution went up, making it, literally, the “park of the constitution.” On the average sunny St. Augustine day, visitors can spend an afternoon strolling through the park. You’ll see the many amazing monuments which pay tribute to fallen soldiers and other important historical figures. If you’re in the mood for something special, though, you can plan ahead and visit during one of the many fun annual events hosted at the Plaza.
Concerts in the Plaza
This is one of two free live summer concert series in St. Augustine (the other being Music by the Sea). Concerts in the Plaza takes place every Thursday from late-May to late-August from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Each performance features a new local or regional band. It all takes place under the park’s lovely gazebo, making this event the perfect addition to a romantic getaway. Do you need more things to do on your next trip to St. Augustine? First Friday Art Walk
The First Friday Art Walk is a year-round event which celebrates St. Augustine’s illustrious art scene. As the name suggests, galleries around the downtown district host events on the first Friday of each month. The works shown vary in genre and medium, so you’ll be sure to find something that catches your eye. There are around 30 galleries which participate, scattered across our city. We suggest that you start at the Plaza and then make your way around the district.
Nights of Lights Lighting Ceremony
St. Augustine’s famous event kicks off in the Plaza de la Constitución! The Nights of Lights starts with the Light Up! Night, which usually takes place in late November. For those unfamiliar, the Nights of Lights Festival is one of the biggest and most elaborate holiday light displays in the world. The downtown district of St. Augustine is decorated with strings of twinkling lights from late November until early January. Light Up! Night marks the start of the event, with the City of St. Augustine turning on these gorgeous lights for the first time of the season. There are usually live performances by local bands and orchestras as well, so it’s not to be missed!
