Old Jail in St. Augustine History

The Old Jail, sometimes called the Old St. Johns County Jail and sometimes called the Authentic Old Jail, was in operation from 1891 to 1953. The jail was financed by Henry Flagler, the industrialist and founder of Standard Oil for who Flagler College is named. Flagler wanted to build his famous Ponce de Leon hotel (which now houses Flagler College) at the site of the previous jail. Flagler’s involvement with the construction of the jail meant that the exterior appearance matched the city’s architectural style. Hence, it was built in the Romanesque Revival style, giving it the appearance of an old Victorian house.
