On Saturday, February 4, the St. Johns County Public Library System and the St. Augustine Amphitheatre invite the community to the St. Johns Reads Hootenanny, celebrating the 12th year of St. Johns Reads, the community-wide reading project, which includes a series of exciting St Augustine Events.
The St. Johns Reads Hootenanny will feature music by The Wobbly Toms and a showing of the 2010 film “True Grit” based on the classic western novel by Charles Portis. Doors open at 4pm, music at 4:45 p.m. and the movie will begin at 5:45 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages, with free parking. Families are encouraged to bring pillows and blankets for warmth and comfort and take advantage of the refreshments being sold at the Amphitheatre.
The St. Johns Public Library System recently announced that “True Grit”, the classic western novel written by Charles Portis, was this year’s featured St. Johns Reads book. “True Grit” was first published in 1968 as a serial in the Saturday Evening Post, and made into the first of two film versions the following year. One of the few westerns told from the perspective of a woman, the classic story features 14-year-old Mattie Ross as she seeks retribution for her father’s murder. To read “True Grit” and to learn more about St. Johns Reads events, contact your local library, call 904.827.6928, or visit www.sjcpls.org. In addition to the Hootenanny, a variety of programs will be staged at all six St. Johns County library locations throughout the month of February. Check their official webpage for more St Augustine Events.
