With so much rich history within St. Augustine, it’s hard to decide just which site to visit first. There’s the famous Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the St. Augustine History Museum, and the Spanish Military Hospital Museum, just to name a few. One of our favorite historical sites in St. Augustine is the Fort Matanzas National Monument. Like the Castillo de San Marcos, the Torre de Matanzas (Matanzas Tower) was a coquina structure meant to guard our beautiful city. Travel back in time and visit this fantastic site!

Brush Up on Fort Matanzas History
Fort Matanzas was originally built by the Spanish in 1742 to guard Matanzas Inlet which could be used as a rear entrance to St. Augustine. Castillo de San Marcos served as protection for the main entrance of the town. Together, these forts in St. Augustine kept invaders out of the city and survived many battles.
Today, the fort is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To get to the fort, you must ride the Fort Matanzas ferry, which runs hourly from 9:30 every morning. Fort Matanzas tickets are totally free, as are the tickets to the ferry!
While you visit the fort, you can watch the reenactments and living demonstrations occurring on the grounds. If you visit on a Wednesday or a Saturday, you’ll be able to see musket demonstrations. They occur every hour from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
Make sure to take advantage of the beautiful nature trails while you’re there! The most popular trail is about a half-mile long and leads to the Fort Matanzas beach as well as the maritime forests. Collect shells, walk along the shores, or even have a picnic on the Fort Matanzas inlet!
