The Flagler 50: Celebrating a College and Preservation Legacy 1968-2018 Exhibition repeats daily through June 30, 2019.
According to the official Flagler website, “Throughout its 50 years, Flagler College in St Augustine has seen a lot of change as the campus grew from its centerpiece, the Hotel Ponce de Leon, now a National Historic Landmark, and Markland House, to the most recent addition of Abare Hall, part of $23 million complex on the San Sebastian River”.
For an entire year, the college will celebrate with a special exhibit named Flagler 50.
This exhibition will open as part of the upcoming repertoire of 50th anniversary celebrations at Flagler College. The exhibition features historic photos and morsels of information about the humble beginnings of the college through today.
The exhibition can be accessed in many ways, including via Flagler’s Legacy Tours, through the Florida Stories phone app available for free download, or a newly created 24-page self-guided tour booklet about the historic campus. The booklet is available to pick up in the Rotunda of Ponce de Leon Hall, where the Legacy Tours begin. The cost for the Legacy Tours is $12 for adults and free for youth under age 10 with a paid adult. In the summer, tours are offered daily from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. While school is in session, tours are offered from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. daily.
The History of Flagler College
In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de León, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. A National Historic Landmark, it serves as the centerpiece for Flagler College.
The Hotel Ponce de León, was innovative for its time and serves as a reminder of his enterprise, diligence and commitment to high standards. The college is pledged to the preservation and use of this facility and other historic and architecturally unique campus structures.
